Okay - so Im starting this in order to hopefully help someone (even just one person!!) out from feeling alone and awful as I have felt.

About this time last year, I heard about the wonder drug Duromine! And thought Id get on it...after having one baby in 2010 and never quite shifting all my weight (Id ballooned to 117 kilos after being 75 kilos)
Anyways I was on duromine for about 3 weeks, lost an amazing 6 kilos and was absolutely wrapped with that! I had even changed my whole out look of eating right and exercising more etc etc. My side effects were diminishing and i was feeling great!

But then a bomb hit me, I found out I was 5 weeks pregnant. Well I freaked out totally, and searched the internet for any info i could find on people being pregnant whilst taking duromine ( as it is classed as a category d drug - which means "the drug has caused, or is suspected to have caused an increased incidence of human fetal malformations or irreversible damage. These drugs may also have adverse pharmacological effects. ") and i couldn't find much to help me feel assured at all. Obviously I stopped taking duromine that very day - but the entire time I was pregnant was very stressful as all I could think was I had harmed my unborn baby in its first critical stages of life, just cos I wanted to lose weight and be selfish....what kind of a mother was i!???

But rest assured, here i am now with a beautiful healthy 8 week old baby and everything is normal....and I am very blessed and lucky to have 2 gorgeous healthy kids.

FYI - i have just started back on duromine (AFTER taking a pregnancy test this time!!!) and have lost 2 kilos in 5 days.

Am now looking forward to continuing where I left off, only with a little bit more added baby weight this time!

(and BTW I dont in anyway condone taking this drug whilst pregnant b4 anyone says that! i stopped straight away, i just wanted to share my story in hopes that someone else out there may be going through the same freak out attack as i did)

good luck to everyone - whatever your goals i hope you succeed xx

Im in the exact same situation, found out at 5 weeks, stopped Duramine immediately but so worried.

My GP says he cannot guarantee the baby will be healthy and termination is my best option. This left me gutted but Ive pulled myself outta bed and I have my dating scan and specialist appointment in an hour. Im in week 8 now.

Are there any more mums out there who have had healthy babies recently after taking Duramine for the first few weeks?

Don't worry so much, babies take everything they need from mother's body, so it's rather affects you than your child. Still, you did well when stoped taking the pills!

Our Bodies are wonderful filters whilst being pregnant! You all did the right thing and stopped taking the tablets as soon as you found out. I'm sure your Drs will put your minds to ease soon :) there is a wonderful gentlemen called Dr Rodney Whyte of Monash in Vicoria, he is The Man who knows absolutely everything when it comes to medication and Pregnancy and Breastfeeding! I was referred to him through the Breastfeeding association of Australia and also My Dr as I was Breastfeeding and wanted to know if I could continue and start Duromine. I rang and got him personally. You can google him to get his number email and fax. Hes the Dr the Drs and Pharmacists get information from about Medication and our Bodies. :) I hope this can help! I've saved his number and call him for everything. He's a Saint!!

Wow djembay I am so happy things turned out good for you. And will keep you guys in prayer Claudia & Mary. Hope all works out well for you two. Which brings me to this question that a friend asked me, she wants to start Duromine but she is scared it will cancel out her oral contraceptive she's currently on. Does Duromine affect oral contraceptive? I did refer her to her doc to get more info but was just wondering if any body knew the answer to this question.

I am 50kg over weight and have been prescribed duromine 30mg. I have a 8 month old bub and am in the process of weaning, he still has breastmilk at night. My gp said it would be ok as it wears off 12hrs after taking it... but I'm still worried. ..

My doctor wouldn't give me duromine until i had weaned my baby. So 2 weeks after i stopped breastfeeding(at 14mths, whoo never thought I'd get to breastfeed so long), i got my script filled for 30mg. I started off at 75kgs and have been on it 4 days and am down to 72kgs (hoping its a consistent thing haha).
I spoke to a lactation consultant and my gp before starting, and both didn't recommend any weight loss products/medications until baby is weaned. I

Just thought I'd chuck that out there and hopefully help.

Thank you for that. I agree, better to start D after your little one is weaned. They take in everything mommy does so it is not a good idea.

I have used duromine on and off for 8 years. I didn't find out i was pregnant until 6 weeks 4 days and before this i was drinking like a fish as been on holiday ... i was using duromine to lose weight and also used cocaine on a few occasions , and i would say quite a substantial amount. I stopped everything immediately upon finding out i was pregnant. I now have a healthy 1 yr and 6 month old . Although i have noticed he is definitely over active compared to other kids and likely has ADHD ( which i have anyway so i can't say whether this is just a personality trait or from the drug and alcohol use or hereditary ) . I think a large percentage of women have drank or used drugs before realising they were pregnant without ill effects on the baby within reason. Anyone who continues to abuse drugs & alcohol througout their pregnancy will obviously cause harm to their baby but within the first month or two extremely unlikely and i highly doubt there was any doctor that would advise someone to terminate their pregnancy for using duromine during the first few weeks. In fact that doctor sounds like some kind of freak and i wouldn't be seeing him again. Your body also has a natural way of rejecting unviable pregnancies which is why women miscarry as often as they do. So if your baby makes it past the first trimester and you stopped using the drugs and or alcohol long before this stage in the pregnancy i would assume the baby is fine.

Would just like to add , i started using durmone again 3 months after having my baby and it made my post natal depression to the point of insanity , i became aggressive and violent and finally stopped taking duromine weeks ago and i am having extremely bad withdrawel symptoms. In saying this , i abused the drug. Just be careful as highly addictive and a dangerous cocktail after having a baby !!!!

That's disgraceful of your doctor to tell you an abortion is the best option!!! Babies are extremely resilient. I was taking antidepressants, pain killers and anti nausea meds and was advised to stop the pills etc but guess what? My five yr old is smart, beautiful and very happy and healthy. You're very early in your pregnancy, I'm sure you're fine xxxx
